How to take apart a Linkstation

First you need to remove two tiny screws that hold the grey plastic piece on. Gently slide a knife blade under the mirror label and peel back until you see the screw.

Now use a small (phillips 000) screwdrive to remove the screw. I don’t plan to reinstall them so I threw them away.

Don’t forget the other side.

Now you can take off the grey plastic piece. On the top and bottom of the box there is a small plastic tab, press it in and slide the plastic piece forward. After doing both, the plastic comes off nicely.

One more screw, underneath the FCC label

From here on out the directions to take apart a KuroBox and a Linkstation are almost the same. But I’ll continue anyway. Under the grey plastic at the top and bottom there are two plastic tabs, press on them and push the two sides of the box apart.

Once you’ve opened both set of tabs the box folds open on the front hinge.

Set aside one side and remove the 4 screws near each corner of the circuit board.

Carefully lift the circuit board up, it should now hinge on the HDD cables. I set it on the other cover.

Remove the two screws holding down the power supply. Note that the PS sits on top of the HDD bracket arm and a small piece of plastic screwed to the HDD bracket.

Once the PS is loose you can gently move it aside and lift the HDD away. It’s hinged on the front of the case so lift it up away from the PS then slide it toward the back. Be careful with the PS cable, it sits over the HDD bracket arm so you have to move it away from the arm.

Now you can remove the cables and do what you wish with the HDD, like install it in an external enclosure and boot Knoppix to recover from a mistake. :-)

Just reverse the procedure to reassemble.

Thanks go to James Stewart. I had read his Linkstation disassembly page a few months ago but then couldn’t find it when I needed to take my Linkstation apart, so I worked from memory. Needless to say I found it a few hours later.
